Rinse them under warm water every single time they come out of your mouth. Once a week, soak in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, brush gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth. That is the whole routine, and it is enough.

The 30 seconds that matter most

  1. Take them out before you eat.
  2. Rinse under warm running water the moment they come out. Warm, not hot.
  3. Pat dry with a soft cloth and let them finish air-drying for a minute.
  4. Back in the case, dry. Never store a wet set in a closed box.

A professional clean, start to finish

Step 1 of 4 — Into the bath. The set goes into the ultrasonic, in warm jewelry solution. Sound waves do the scrubbing and reach behind every stone. Watch the water go cloudy — that is buildup lifting off.

Step 2 of 4 — Polish, small wheel. The small wheel gets into the places the big one cannot: between the teeth, around each setting, along the edges. This is the slow part.

Step 3 of 4 — Polish, big wheel. Then the big wheel brings the faces up to a mirror across the whole set at once, so the shine reads as one surface instead of eight separate teeth.

Step 4 of 4 — Steamed off. Polishing compound gets blasted out of every setting with a steam gun, then the set is dried and every setting checked before it goes back in the case.

Why we use an ultrasonic and you should not. We will be straight with you: an ultrasonic can loosen a stone setting. That is a real risk and it is why most jewelers tell you to stay away from them. We run one anyway, because we know how to clean grillz professionally — and because if a setting does come loose in the bath, we are the ones who made the set and we tighten it on the spot, before it ever leaves the shop. At home, a loose setting becomes a lost stone in your sink. Soap and a soft brush at home. Leave the ultrasonic and the wheels to us.

The weekly deep clean, at home

  1. Warm water, one drop of mild dish soap. Warm to the touch, never hot — heat is what loosens adhesive in a setting.
  2. Soak 10–15 minutes.
  3. Brush gently, soft bristles only. Work the inside of the set and the edges where it meets the gum line.
  4. Rinse thoroughly under warm running water. Do it over a bowl, not an open drain.
  5. Dry completely with a lint-free cloth and buff the faces. Store dry.

Never put these near your set

  • Bleach or chlorine — attacks the alloys in gold and will pit the surface.
  • Ammonia — recommended all over the internet for diamonds, but not for something that goes back in your mouth.
  • Toothpaste — it is an abrasive. It will haze a polished face and wear through plating.
  • Whitening products — whiten your teeth with the set out.
  • Boiling water or a dishwasher — heat is the fastest way to loosen a stone.
  • A countertop ultrasonic — it can loosen settings. We run one because we can retighten a setting on the spot; you cannot.
  • A polishing wheel — a bench wheel will cut metal and strip plating in seconds in untrained hands.
  • Hard or stiff brushes — scratches metal, loosens settings.
  • Storing them wet — trapped moisture is how silver tarnishes fast.

What changes by metal

Solid 10K, 14K and 18K gold. Gold does not tarnish. If a gold set looks dull, that is film on the surface, and soap and water will take it off. 10K is the hardest and most scratch-resistant; 18K is the softest and richest in colour. Scratches polish out. Keep it away from chlorine.

Solid .925 sterling silver. Silver tarnishes — that is chemistry, not a defect, and ours is solid .925, not plated base metal. A silver polishing cloth handles it in a minute. Do not use dip solutions on a stone-set piece. Dry storage slows tarnish more than anything else.

Rhodium white, yellow gold or rose gold plating. Our plating sits on top of solid sterling silver, not on brass or steel. It is a surface layer, so it wears with time — and it is re-platable. Never use an abrasive on plating, and do not use a solid-silver polishing cloth on it. When it looks uneven, call us.

Diamond, lab diamond and moissanite

All three clean the same way. Natural and lab-grown diamond are the same material and the same hardness. Moissanite is silicon carbide — a different stone, slightly softer, but still far harder than anything in your cleaning routine. What dulls a stone is the film of oil on its underside, where light enters, which is why a proper soak beats wiping the faces. Every stone we set is VVS clarity or better. The part people skip: your actual teeth

A clean grill over an unbrushed mouth is the thing that causes problems. Brush and floss before you put the set in. Take it out to eat. Do not sleep in it — saliva flow drops overnight, the worst condition to trap residue against a tooth. Keep your normal dental checkups and tell your dentist you wear a set. Why do my silver grillz look dark? Sterling silver tarnishes — normal chemistry, not a fault. A silver polishing cloth takes it off in a minute.

Does plating wear off, and can it be redone? Yes and yes. Plating is a surface finish over solid .925 sterling silver, so it wears with time, and we can re-plate it.
