Grillz Mold Kit Guide: How to Take Your Own Impression at Home

Getting fitted for custom grillz used to mean sitting in a chair somewhere. It doesn't anymore. A dental impression is not a complicated procedure — it is putty, a tray, and about two minutes of holding still. Thousands of people take their own every year and get a set back that fits like it was cast on their teeth, because it was.

What comes in the mold kit

Every order ships with a free impression kit. It goes out the same day you order, and it includes:

Six impression trays — three for the top and three for the bottom. You get three attempts at each arch on purpose. The first one is not always the good one, and we would rather you use all six than send back something we cannot work from.
Two-part impression putty — a base and a catalyst. They are inert until you mix them.
An instruction card with the exact mixing and setting times for the material in your kit.
Return packaging so your molds get back to us intact.

The kit is free and there is nothing to return if you decide not to go through with the order.

How to take your grillz mold at home

Watch this first if you would rather see it than read it — then come back for the detail underneath.

Read all the way through once before you open anything. The putty starts setting the moment the two parts touch, so you want to know where you are going before you start.

Set up first. Clear a counter, put the trays where you can reach them, and have a mirror in front of you. Brush your teeth and rinse. A clean surface takes a cleaner impression.
Check the tray against your mouth before mixing. Seat an empty tray over your teeth to confirm it covers everything you want in the set, front to back, with a little room on each side. If it does not cover the teeth you are ordering, stop and text us before you mix anything.
Mix the putty. Take equal amounts of base and catalyst and knead them together with dry hands until the colour is completely uniform — no streaks, no marbling. Streaks mean it will set unevenly. Follow the timing on your instruction card; from here you are on a clock.
Load the tray. Roll the mixed putty into a log and press it evenly along the channel of the tray. Keep the depth consistent end to end. Do not overfill.
Seat it straight down. Centre the tray on your teeth and press up (or down, for the bottom) in one motion, straight on. Do not rock it, do not slide it forward or back. Press until you feel your teeth bottom out in the putty.
Hold completely still. Keep steady pressure and do not move your jaw, talk, or shift the tray. This is the part that decides whether the mold is usable. Watch the clock on your instruction card — pulling it early is the single most common way a mold gets rejected.
Remove it in one pull. When the time is up, break the seal at the back and pull the tray straight off in one motion. Wiggling it out distorts the impression you just took.
Check your work. Look at the impression. You should see crisp, individual tooth shapes with defined edges, and you should see the gum line. If the teeth look rounded, shallow, smeared, or you can see through to the tray anywhere, take it again. You have three trays for that arch, so you have two more shots — nobody is judging you, and that is exactly why we send three.
Repeat for the other arch if you are ordering both.
Let it fully set, then send it back. Leave the trays out to finish curing, pack them so they cannot rattle around in transit, and mail them to us.

The part most places skip: a jeweler on video while you take it

Most companies mail you a kit and wish you luck. We get on FaceTime or Instagram video and walk you through the impression while you are taking it.

That means someone who has looked at thousands of these is watching your tray seat, telling you if you are off-centre, telling you when to pull, and looking at the finished impression with you before you seal the envelope. If it needs to be redone, you find out in that call — not two weeks later when a set comes back that does not fit.

Common mistakes that ruin a mold

Pulling the tray early. The most common one by far. If the putty has not fully set, the impression relaxes the moment it leaves your mouth and every tooth reads slightly wrong.
Under-mixing the putty. Streaks of unmixed base or catalyst set at different rates and leave soft spots.
Rocking the tray on the way in. Seating it at an angle records your teeth at an angle.
Not enough putty. If your teeth bottom out against the plastic tray, there is nothing to record the biting surface.
Too much putty. Overfilling pushes material back toward your throat and makes the impression uncomfortable without improving it.
Wiggling it out. Distorts the exact detail you just spent two minutes capturing.

If any of these happen, take it again. You have three trays for each arch. A second attempt costs you nothing but ten minutes.

What happens after you send it back

We pour and inspect the model. If the impression is not clean enough to work from, we call you and send another kit — we do not guess and hope.

How do you get fitted for grillz?

Can I take my own grillz mold at home?
