How Do Grillz Stay On Your Teeth? Fit, Feel And What To Do If They're Loose

Removable custom grillz stay on your teeth by fit alone. The set is cast from an impression of your own teeth, so the metal follows the shape of each tooth and grips it by friction — the same way a well-made ring holds a finger. There is no glue, no adhesive and no dental cement involved, and there should never be. If a set needs something to keep it in place, the fit is wrong and the set needs to be corrected.

How grillz stay on

How do grillz stay on your teeth?

Teeth are not smooth cylinders. Every tooth has undercuts, edges and small contours, and no two people share the same set. A custom set is built off a dental impression of your mouth, so the inside of the metal is a negative of your own teeth. When you seat it, the metal passes the widest part of each tooth and settles slightly past it. That is what holds it. Friction and mechanical grip, nothing else.

This is also why a set made to a generic size will never hold properly. It can sit on the teeth, but it has nothing to grip. The impression is the whole product. Everything after it — the gold, the stones, the finish — is built on top of that one piece of information.

Do grillz need glue or adhesive?

No. Nothing you can buy in a shop belongs in your mouth for this purpose. The American Dental Association has warned that household adhesives can damage enamel and the soft tissue around the teeth. If anyone tells you to glue a set in, what they are really telling you is that the set does not fit.

We do make permanent grillz. Those are fitted by hand, in person, at the Houston shop only — never by mail.

The impression

A mold of your actual teeth, taken at home with our kit while we are on a live video call with you.

The cast

Solid 10K, 14K or 18K gold, or solid .925 sterling silver, built directly off that mold — not off a size chart.

The grip

The metal seats past the contour of each tooth and holds there. That friction is the only thing keeping the set on.

How should custom grillz fit?

What does a correct fit feel like?

You should feel light resistance as the set goes on, then a small settle as it seats. Once it is on, it should stay put while you talk. It should come off with steady finger pressure — not a fight, and not a tug that makes your teeth ache.

What you should not feel is pressure on your gums, soreness in a specific tooth, or any rocking or sliding. A correct set is firm and quiet. If you are constantly aware of it, something is off.

How tight is too tight?

If you have to force a set on, stop. If removing it requires real effort, or if it leaves your gums sore, that is not a fit you should wear in. Grillz do not break in like shoes. Never bend, file or pry a set to make it work — you will damage the metal, the stones, or your teeth. Tell us instead.

If you have pain, bleeding gums or an existing dental issue, see a dentist. We make jewelry. We do not treat teeth, and a set of grillz is not a treatment for anything.

How loose is too loose?

A set that shifts when you speak, drops when you open wide, or can be lifted off with your tongue is too loose. That is not something you manage around. It is a refit.

What do I do if my grillz don't fit?

Contact us. Every order we ship carries a refit or refund policy — if the fit is off, we make it right. On top of that, every set carries a lifetime warranty covering repairs and stone replacement. You are not stuck with a set that does not sit correctly.

What not to do: do not glue it, do not bend it, do not have it adjusted by anyone who did not make it. All three usually turn a fixable problem into an expensive one.

Why would a custom set not fit?

Almost always the impression. A mold that did not capture enough of the tooth, or moved while setting, produces a model that is not quite your mouth — and a set is only ever as accurate as its model. Dental work done after the impression can also change the shape the set was built to.

How do you get the impression right by mail?

We get on a live video call with you while you take it. Most companies email a link to a YouTube video and hope for the best. We watch you mix, load the tray and seat it, and we tell you in real time if it needs doing again — which is the entire reason we can stand behind a fit taken hundreds of miles away.

The order runs like this: you order, the mold kit ships the same day, we set up the live video chat, you send the mold back with the prepaid return label already in the box, and we build the set. Turnaround is 16–20 business days. The full walkthrough is on our grillz mold kit guide.

Can grillz fall out?

A properly fitted removable set should not fall out during normal wear. A badly fitted one can. Loose sets come from a poor impression, from teeth that have changed since the mold was taken, or from a set that has been bent or damaged.

If a set starts feeling loose, stop wearing it and get in touch before you lose it. A refit is straightforward. A replacement is not.

FAQ

Do you need glue to keep grillz on?

No. A custom set holds by fit alone. The ADA has warned that household adhesives can damage enamel and gum tissue, and a set that needs glue is a set that needs remaking.

Can you talk with grillz in?

Yes, and it is a good test of fit. A correct set stays seated and silent while you talk. If it shifts or clicks, it is too loose.

What if my grillz feel too tight?

Do not force them and do not try to adjust them yourself. Call us on 281-572-6159 or bring them to the shop at 300 Sharpstown Center, Houston. Every order carries a refit or refund policy.

Can I get permanent grillz by mail?

No. We make permanent grillz in person at the Houston shop only. Permanent work is never done by mail.

What are the sets actually made from?

Solid 10K, 14K or 18K gold, or solid .925 sterling silver, which can be plated rhodium white, yellow or rose. Stones are VVS clarity or better only, in natural diamond, lab-grown diamond or moissanite.

How long does a set take to make?

16–20 business days once we have your mold back. The kit ships the same day you order, so the clock really starts at the impression.

Does a better fit cost more?

No. Fit is not an upgrade — it is the baseline. Price is driven by metal, weight and stones. See how much grillz cost for how that works.
