How Are Custom Grillz Made? From Your Mold To Your Mouth

Custom grillz are made from an impression of your own teeth. You place the order, the mold kit ships the same day, and a jeweler joins you on a live video call while you take the impression at home. You send the mold back in the box with the prepaid return label. From that mold we carve the wax, cast it in solid gold or solid .925 sterling silver, set every stone by hand, then finish and ship. Turnaround is 16 to 20 business days, year round.

How custom grillz are made, step by step

1. You order. Pick your teeth count, metal and style from the custom grillz collection, or call 281-572-6159 and build the set on the phone with a jeweler.
2. The mold kit ships the same day. Not the next business day. The same day. Inside the box: trays, impression putty, instructions and a prepaid return label.
3. A jeweler gets on a live video call with you. You take the impression while someone who makes grillz for a living watches. He tells you where to seat the tray, how deep to push and when to pull. If it comes out short, he says so on the call and you run the second set of putty right then.
4. You ship the mold back. Prepaid label, already in the box. Drop it off.
5. We build the set. Wax, casting, stone setting, finishing. This is where the 16 to 20 business days go.
6. It ships to you. Backed by a lifetime warranty on repairs and stone replacement, and a refit or refund policy on every order.

The four stages that carry the cost and the craft

Once your mold is in the shop, the set moves through four stages. Each one can make or break the piece, and together they decide what a set costs.

Wax

A model is poured from your impression, and the grill is built in wax on top of it. This stage decides the fit, the metal thickness, the bite clearance and the shape of the tooth. It is also where a lot of jewelers mess up execution. Wax too thin cracks in casting. Wax too thick makes a bulky grill that pushes your lips out and fights your bite. Edges not closed down to the model leave a gap you feel with your tongue for as long as you own the piece. A grill that fits badly almost always failed here.

Casting

The wax is burned out and molten metal takes its place. We cast in solid 10K, 14K and 18K gold, and in solid .925 sterling silver. Silver can be finished rhodium white, yellow plated or rose plated. Casting is unforgiving: trapped air leaves porosity, which shows up as pinholes in the surface and weak spots under a stone seat. A porous casting does not get patched. It gets recast.

Stone setting

The slowest stage in the shop, and the one that stretches the timeline on a heavy set. Every seat is cut and every stone set by hand. We only use VVS clarity or better, in natural diamond, lab-grown diamond or moissanite. No lower tier, and no option to drop a grade to save time. Hand setting is slow because seats have to be cut to depth on a curved surface, and because a stone sitting proud of the metal will catch and eventually pop. Rushed setting is the most common reason a grill loses stones in its first year.

Finishing

Polishing, cleanup of the inside surface, checking the bite, checking every stone. The inside matters more than people expect: a rough interior is uncomfortable and traps debris. The outside gets photographed, but the inside is what you live with.

The questions people actually ask

How long does it take to make custom grillz?

16 to 20 business days, year round. That number does not stretch in December. It is the honest time it takes to build a wax, cast it, cut and set every stone by hand, and finish the piece. Add shipping in both directions when you plan around a date, and order early for an event rather than asking for a rush.

How do you mold your teeth for grillz?

You mix the putty from the kit, load the tray, seat it over your teeth, hold it still, and let it set for the full time. That is the whole job. The details are what get people. The tray has to be centered and pushed straight on so the putty captures the full height of the tooth and the gumline, and it has to stay still while it cures. Move it and you smear the detail. Pull it early and the impression distorts as it finishes setting. On our kit, a jeweler is on video watching this and correcting you in real time.

Can I do grillz molds at home?

Yes. A home impression is perfectly viable when it is done right, and it is what most of our customers do. We are not claiming it beats a dentist's impression. We are saying a correct home mold is enough to build a grill that fits. The common failures are simple and repeatable: seating the tray crooked or too shallow so the back teeth or the gumline do not register, and rushing the set time. Both are visible to a trained eye while they happen. That is what the video call is for. You hear it on the call instead of finding out two weeks later.

Can grillz be made through the mail?

Yes, and it is most of what we do. The kit goes out same day, you take the impression on the call, the prepaid label brings it back, and the finished set ships to you. One exception. We also make permanent grillz, but only in person at the Houston shop. Permanent work is never done by mail.

What if my mold comes out bad?

The jeweler tells you before you hang up, and you take a second impression on the spot. That is the point of doing it live.

Do I need a dentist for the impression?

No. A home impression done correctly is enough to build a grill that fits. We are not comparing it to a dentist's work. We are telling you it does the job when it is taken properly, and the video call is how we make sure it is.

How long is the video call?

Long enough to take the impression and check it, including a second attempt if the first is not clean. You are scheduled with a jeweler, not left with a link.

Which stage takes the longest?

Stone setting. Every seat is cut and every stone placed by hand, so a heavy set takes real bench time.

Can I get permanent grillz by mail?

No. Permanent grillz are done in person at the Houston shop only, at 300 Sharpstown Center. Removable custom sets ship anywhere.

What if a stone falls out, or the set does not fit?

A lost or damaged stone gets replaced under the lifetime warranty, which also covers repairs. If the fit is off, there is a refit or refund policy on every order. You are not stuck with a set that does not sit right.
