Grillz Styles Explained: Invisible Set, Galaxy, Open Face, End Cap And More

A grillz style is two decisions: how the metal covers the tooth, and how the stones sit in the metal. Solid, open face and end cap describe the metal. Diamond cut, starburst, honeycomb, invisible set and galaxy set describe the surface and stone layout. Jumbo, pointer numbers and fangs describe scale. Everything below is cast from your own dental impression in solid gold or solid .925 silver, set only with VVS clarity or better natural diamond, lab diamond or moissanite.

The fastest way to narrow it down is coverage first, then stone treatment, then tooth count. Work in that order and the choice gets small quickly.

The styles, explained

Solid / plain gold

A full face of metal, polished flat, no stones. Still the cleanest read at a distance. Available in yellow gold, white gold and rose gold, in solid 10K or 14K gold or solid .925 silver plated to match.

Diamond cut and dust

No stones. The face is cut and textured on the bench so it throws light instead of sitting flat. Sparkle without the cost of setting stones. In yellow, white and rose gold.

Starburst cut

Another cut finish, worked into a radiating pattern rather than an even dust. More pattern, more movement. In yellow, white and rose gold.

Open face

A border of metal frames the tooth and your natural tooth shows through the middle. It is not a "cheaper solid" — it is a different look, and on deeply overlapped or crowded teeth it usually sits better and reads cleaner than a solid face, because the metal follows the real edge of the tooth instead of covering the overlap. Invisible set

The stones are seated so the metal holding them is hidden. Instead of prongs or beads between stones, you see a continuous field of stone. It is the slowest style on the bench, because every stone has to be cut into place with almost no margin for error. That hand time is the real cost, not the metal. Galaxy set

A mixed-size stone layout: larger stones anchor the face and smaller stones fill around them, so the surface reads as a dense field rather than a tidy grid. People also search this as "mosaic" — we do not use that name on any product, but galaxy is the look they mean. The pointer number in the title is the size class of the anchor stones: small galaxy 4 pointer, moissanite galaxy 6 pointer, lab diamond galaxy 8 pointer, and a marquise galaxy using marquise-shaped stones. Like invisible set, it takes far longer to set than a plain row.

End cap

End cap means the set caps the ends and corners of the arch, not only the front. It is how you get metal and stone showing when you talk and turn your head. Honeycomb

Jumbo and pointer sizes

Jumbo means the set is built around larger individual stones. A higher pointer number is a bigger stone. Compare jumbo 6 pointer lab diamond, jumbo 10 pointer lab diamond, jumbo 6 pointer moissanite, and at the top end natural VVS diamond with 15 pointers.

Fangs and double cap

Fangs are a two-tooth statement piece — jumbo natural VVS diamond fangs or galaxy set 8 pointer fangs. A double cap covers a specific pair you choose by position, top or bottom. Both work well when you want something small and precise rather than a full arch.

Perm cut

A finish, not a style of its own. It is a +$25 option on product pages and can be added to most builds. It is not the same as permanent grillz, which are done only in person at the Houston shop.

What size stones are best?

Bigger is not automatically better. This is the mistake we correct most often.

A stone too large for the tooth it sits on crowds its neighbors. Spacing goes uneven, the line across the arch breaks up, and the set loses the thing that makes it look expensive: clean, deliberate geometry.

The right size fills the face of your tooth with even spacing and no dead gaps at the edges. That size differs from a lateral incisor to a canine, and differs again between your teeth and someone else's. Every set is sized to the customer's actual teeth from their impression, so a pointer number is a starting scale, not a fixed dimension applied blindly.

Clarity is not a variable to shop here. Everything is VVS or better — natural diamond, lab-grown diamond or moissanite, no lower tier. Should you get 6, 8 or 10 teeth?

Start with what your face actually shows.

Top 6 is the most common first set. It covers what a normal smile shows, and for most people nothing is missing.

Top 8 starts showing metal at the corners when you talk, not only when you grin. That is the step up if you want it seen in conversation.

Top 10 or more is for the full effect on camera. A deliberate choice, not an upgrade everyone needs.

Each arch is priced separately. Order top only, bottom only or both; stock builds run 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 teeth per arch. Plenty of people buy a top first and add a bottom later.

What are invisible-set grillz?
