Can You Get Grillz With Missing, Crooked Or Gapped Teeth? Yes — Here's How
Yes. You can get custom grillz with missing teeth, crooked teeth, gaps, chips or uneven lengths — and in most cases the grill will make your smile read straighter and more even than it does now. A custom set is cast from an impression of your actual mouth, so the inside of the grill follows your real teeth and grips them, while the outside is shaped by the jeweler. Those two surfaces do not have to match.
Most people who ask us this have already decided they are not a candidate. They looked at a photo, saw the tooth that sits behind the others, and assumed grillz are for people with straight teeth. They are not. Crooked and gapped mouths are a large part of what we make every week, and they are the sets that show the biggest difference when they go in.
Why crooked teeth are not a problem
A custom grill is not a strip of metal pressed against your teeth. It is a casting made from a mold of your mouth, and it has two distinct surfaces.
The inside surface is the one nobody sees. It follows the exact shape of your teeth — every rotation, every overlap, every dip — because that is what the impression captured. That is what makes the set grip and stay put without adhesive.
The outside surface is the face everyone sees. That surface is shaped by hand at the bench. It does not have to follow your teeth at all. If your lateral incisor sits a few millimetres behind its neighbour, we build that part of the grill thicker so the front of the metal comes forward and lands level with the rest. The tooth stays exactly where it is. The line across the front of your smile runs straight.
That is the whole answer. The inside does the gripping. The outside does the looking. They come from the same casting, and they are allowed to disagree.
What a custom set can visually correct
- Gaps. We close them by widening the faces of the teeth on either side. If you like your gap and want it kept, we keep it — plenty of customers do.
- Rotated or overlapping teeth. We build a flat, even face across the front so the metal reads as one clean line instead of following the turn of the tooth.
- Chipped or worn edges. The chip sits under the metal. The grill carries a clean, unbroken edge over it.
- Uneven lengths. A short tooth gets extended slightly so the bottom edge of the set runs level across your smile.
- Missing teeth. We bridge across the space with a solid face, so the gap does not show when the set is in.
- Teeth sitting at different depths. Thicker metal on the recessed side brings that tooth forward to match its neighbours.
Design matters here too. On deeply overlapped teeth, an open face — a border of metal framing the tooth rather than covering it — often sits better and looks cleaner than a solid face. We will tell you which way we would go on your mouth and why.
There are limits, and we are straight about them. Severe crowding can mean noticeably thicker metal on one side, or a cap on how straight the front line can run. If that is the case with your set, you hear it from us before you pay, not after it ships.
What a grill will not do
Grillz are removable cosmetic jewelry. They do not move, straighten or realign your real teeth. The correction is visual, and it lasts exactly as long as the grill is in your mouth. Take it out and your teeth are where they were. Any jeweler who tells you a grill will straighten your teeth is selling you something that is not true.
A grill also treats nothing. Not decay, not gum disease, not pain, not a bite problem. If you have tooth pain, a loose tooth or bleeding gums, see a dentist first — before the mold, not after. We would rather delay your order than build a set over a problem that needs treating.
And a grill is not a structural replacement for a missing tooth. A bridge or an implant restores the tooth and its function. A grill hides the space. Those are different things, and it is worth knowing which one you are buying.
Can you get grillz with missing teeth?
Yes. We bridge the space with a solid face so the run of teeth looks continuous. Neighbouring teeth carry the set, so what matters is how wide the gap is and how many healthy teeth sit either side of it. Send photos and we will tell you honestly what we can do. If you also plan to have the tooth restored by a dentist, do that first — a set molded before the work will not fit after it.
Can you get grillz with crooked teeth?
Yes, and this is where a custom set earns its money. The mold captures your teeth as they are; the face is built flat and even. On severe crowding we will talk through an open-face design and the honest limits before anything gets cast.
Can you get grillz with gaps in your teeth?
Yes, and you choose. We can close a gap by widening the two faces beside it so the front reads solid, or keep your gap exactly as it is. Neither costs you accuracy of fit. Tell us on the call which you want.
Can you wear grillz with braces?
We do not recommend it, and we will not build a set for a mouth in active treatment. Braces are moving your teeth on purpose. A set molded today stops fitting within weeks, because the teeth it was cast from will have shifted. Beyond fit, anything worn over orthodontic hardware is a question for your orthodontist, not a jeweler — ask them, not us.
Wait until the braces come off. That is actually the ideal moment to get molded: your teeth are settled, they are where they are going to stay, and the set will fit for years.
Molded on a live call
A jeweler joins you on video while you take the impression at home. Not a YouTube link and good luck. This matters most on exactly the mouths other shops get wrong.

Common questions
Will the grill make my teeth look straight even if they are not?
While it is in, yes. The visible face is built as a straight, even line regardless of how the teeth behind it sit. Out of your mouth, nothing has changed.
How many teeth can be missing before a grill stops working?
There is no single number. It depends on where the gaps are and how many sound teeth remain on each side to hold the set. Send photos and we will give you a straight answer before you order.
Do I need a dentist before ordering?
Only if something is wrong. Pain, a loose tooth, bleeding gums or work you already know you need — see a dentist first. A grill sits over a problem, it does not fix one. See are grillz bad for your teeth for more.
Can I take the mold myself with teeth this crooked?
Yes, with us on the call. Difficult mouths are the reason we do it live instead of mailing a kit and hoping. Read the mold kit guide to see what the process looks like.
Open face or solid face for overlapped teeth?
Often open face. A metal border around the tooth can sit flatter and look cleaner than a solid face on a deep overlap. We will recommend one based on your mold and explain why.
Can I get permanent grillz instead?
We make permanent grillz, but only in person at our Houston shop. They are not available by mail.
Will a gap or crooked tooth change what I pay?
Pricing follows metal, tooth count and stones. See how much grillz cost for how it is built.
What if it does not fit when it arrives?
Every order carries a refit or refund policy, plus a lifetime warranty covering repairs and stone replacement. More on how we work at why VVSANDBETTER.
