Yes, you can eat, drink and sleep with grillz in — but you should not. Take your set out before you eat and before you sleep. Water is fine. Everything else leaves residue between the metal and your teeth, and that is where problems start. A removable set is meant to go in and come out. Treat it like jewelry, not like a tooth.

The American Dental Association is straightforward here. There are no studies showing grills are harmful, and none showing long-term wear is safe. Nobody has proven either side. What the ADA does list are the risks: trapped food and debris that let bacteria produce decay-causing acids, gum tissue damage, enamel wear on the opposing teeth, tissue irritation, bad breath, and allergic reactions to non-precious metals. Their recommendations follow: limit wearing time, remove the grill before eating, clean it daily, brush and floss carefully, never use glue, and know exactly what metal your grill is made of.

That last one matters. Solid gold and sterling silver are non-reactive and stable in the mouth. Base metals and unmarked alloys corrode, and corrosion is what causes reactions. Can you eat with grillz?

The rule is simple: if you are going to chew it, take the set out first. Case, eat, rinse, brush if you can, set back in. Two minutes of effort.

Can you drink with grillz in?

Water is fine. Keep the set in and drink water all day with no issue. Dark and acidic drinks are the problem — coffee, red wine, soda, juice, energy drinks. They leave residue that sits against your teeth and dulls the metal. If you drink something like that with the set in, rinse with water afterwards and clean the set that night.

Can you sleep with grillz in?

No. Take it out. Sleeping in a set means eight hours of metal against gum tissue and enamel with nothing clearing it, and if you grind or clench at night you are grinding against gold. The set goes in its case before bed, every night.

How do you clean grillz?

Daily, and with nothing you would not put in your mouth. The ADA is clear that jewelry cleaners and anything unsafe to swallow do not belong near a grill.

How long do grillz last?

A solid gold set that is taken out for food and sleep, cleaned daily and stored in its case will last for years. There is no wear-out date on solid gold. What shortens a set's life is handling: dropped on tile, bent by being forced in, chewed with, or knocked around loose.

Two honest points about metal. Solid gold does not tarnish. Sterling silver does, and it will need polishing from time to time — that is normal for the material, not a defect. On plated silver, whether rhodium-white, yellow or rose, the plating can wear with daily use and can be redone. Anyone telling you plating lasts forever is selling you something.

Can you smoke with grillz?

You can, and plenty of people do. The practical effect, without the lecture: smoke residue films onto metal and dulls it, and it builds up in the tooth cups. On plated silver the discolouration shows faster than on solid gold. It makes a set look tired sooner between cleanings. Take it out, or clean the set the same night.

Can you vape with grillz?

Same answer, milder version. Vapour leaves a sticky film on metal and around stone settings, which is what kills the sparkle on a VVS set. Rinse with water after, and clean it that evening.

How to care for your set

1. Take it out before you eat. Every time.
2. Take it out before you sleep. Store it in the case, not on a nightstand.
3. Rinse with warm water after every wear.
4. Brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and mild soap or non-abrasive toothpaste once a day.
5. Brush and floss your own teeth carefully while the set is out — the teeth underneath need more attention, not less.
6. Drink water freely with it in. Rinse after anything dark or acidic.
7. Store it dry and in its case. Never loose in a pocket.
8. Limit how long you wear it in one stretch, as the ADA recommends.
9. Never use glue or any adhesive that fixes a removable set in place.

Common questions

Can I wear my grillz all day?

You can, but the ADA recommends limiting wearing time and we agree. Wear it out, take it out to eat, take it out to sleep. All-day wear with no breaks is the pattern most likely to cause trouble.

Will grillz damage my teeth?

Can I use a jewelry cleaner on my grillz?

No. The ADA says not to use jewelry cleaners or anything that is not safe to swallow. Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush do the job. A silver polishing cloth is fine for the outside of sterling silver.

Do gold grillz tarnish?

Solid gold does not tarnish. Sterling silver does, and it polishes back. Plating on silver can wear over time and can be reapplied.

Can I kiss with grillz in?

Yes. The set is smooth, solid metal with no adhesive holding it in.

Do permanent grillz change any of this?

Yes, because you cannot take them out. Cleaning around them becomes the whole job, every day. We do make permanent grillz, but only in person at the Houston shop — never by mail.
